Spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7)

Written and reviewed by Dr Ibrahim Imam, Consultant Neurologist. Last reviewed .

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7). This is caused by mutations in the ATXN7 (Ataxin 7) gene on chromosome 3p. Fully referenced neurology checklist.

Genetics

  • This is caused by mutations in the ATXN7 (Ataxin 7) gene on chromosome 3p
  • There are CAG repeat expansions with prominent anticipation
  • 44-85 repeats are pathogenic
  • The transmission is autosomal dominant
  • The phenotypes range from asymptomatic to severe
