- Plasma GALC enzyme activity: this is reduced
- GALC mutational analysis: this is positive
- Psychosine level: this is elevated
- Nerve conduction studies (NCS): this may be abnormal
- Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis: this is usually normal
